‘Year’s worst kept secret is out!’
Jon Derek, who has been a regular on our Pontin’s Festivals over the years and is appearing, to the delight of his many fans on this one, has announced his decision to go into semi-retirement at the end of this year. Jon will still be appearing on major festivals and big events.
PONTIN’S COUNTRY FESTIVAL NEWS – 1991
Jon Derek's pedigree is second to none, having shared the stage with a plethora of superstars such as George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Jim Reeves, Glen Campbell, Hank Locklin, Don Gibson, Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare etc. Add to this two appearances at the Royal Albert Hall, five at the London Palladium and just about every major festival that has ever been put on, stir in two No.1 hit records in Malta and we have probably the hottest singing property that Britain has produced in the realms of country music.
Tribute To Country Legends Show - Lakeside, Frimley Green
The last show before the interval was by George Jones & The Jones Boys, or was it by Jon Derek and 'West Virginia'? If you listened to Jon's chat as well as his singing you really would have believed that it was George Jones - well almost - so for the purpose of this report I will refer to him as George. He started off with 'Woke Up This Morning'. Like the other acts 'George' told little stories about him and the Jones Boys between each song and he covered most of his biggies including 'Love Bug', 'She Thinks I Still Care', 'The Race Is On', etc. etc. The audience loved him so he encored with 'Love's Gonna Live Here Again'. But then explained he had to leave because it was time to get 'back on the lawnmower and drive home'!
